This happens to the best of us…

At any moment in time most of us would rather enjoy youtube videos of cats, binge watch Instagram stories or stalk our crush then write an essay, or do our maths homework.

We all know we should spend less time on distracting sites and more time studying or getting work done. But how can we do this when they are so easily accessible?

Imagine if you were able to remove I and every other online distraction from existence just until you have finished your essay or exam study?

Good news! You can!

There are apps specifically designed to block access to certain sites for a chosen period of time. For example, if you need a distraction free hour to finish your essay you can block facebook, youtube, reddit, instagram and anything else you find distracting, for that hour.

If you try to access any of these sites, you will simply get an error message and you’ll have no choice but to go back and continue writing your essay.

All you need to do is download a free app on your computer or laptop!


If you have a MAC, there is Self Control App:

“SelfControl is a free and open-source application for macOS that lets you block your own access to distracting websites, your mail servers, or anything else on the Internet. Just set a period of time to block for, add sites to your blacklist, and click “Start.” Until that timer expires, you will be unable to access those sites—even if you restart your computer or delete the application”


For Windows user, the equivalent is Cold Turkey:

“Use Cold Turkey to block anything from a specific webpage to the entire Internet. You can also block applications and even lock yourself out of your computer!

Not looking for a complete block? No problem. Cold Turkey lets you add Pomodoro-like timers or daily time limits to add breaks to your block. You can also add website exceptions to make sure certain sites don’t get blocked.”

These apps make it easier to focus on your work without having to worry about being distracted and losing hours of precious study time!

By eliminating the temptation and ability to distract yourself, you are putting yourself in a better position to maximise marks and minimise stress!
